Opening Ceremony - Pōwhiri

Seating To Go and the OSS Committee would like to invite all delegates to participate in the Pōwhiri on Monday 20 November at 8.30am. To ensure that this begins on time, we ask that all delegates complete their registration between 7.30 and 8.30am.

The Pōwhiri will involve the tangata whenua (people of the land) welcoming the manuhiri (visitors) to the area/conference  – in this case, the tangata whenua will be the students and whānau (family) of Te Wharekura o Ngāti Rongomai, a small local school of 110 students.

We ask that all delegates remain in the Grand Hall (registration area) and gather for the Pōwhiri, with women at the front and men at the rear.

The first voice you will hear is the karanga (call out, summon), carried out by a kuia (female elder) from the tangata whenua. The manuhiri kuia will respond. The karanga clears our path to enter the conference. As a group we will enter the main auditorium, once through the doors we ask delegates to seat themselves at the tables unless you would like to join Seating To Go in our waiata (song) – Te Aroha. We will sing this after our Kaumātua (Māori elder) has completed his Whaikōrero (speech). Please find the lyrics to the waiata below, with a YouTube link available here:

We will be collecting a koha (donation) for those who would like to contribute to the school. A kete (basket) will be at the registration desk. This will be presented to Te Wharekura o Ngāti Rongomai during the Pōwhiri.
